How to Join
Graduate Students
Graduate students in the IMPACT program assist in the mentoring of the undergrads while also working on their own thesis research. This enhances graduate education by giving our M.S. and Ph.D students leadership opportunities and a greater breadth of understanding in their research area. Students who are interested in working with one of the faculty researchers should contact them directly or attend our IMPACT Weekly Meetings (see event calendar).
Undergraduate Students
Each year, the IMPACT program runs an undergraduate research training program. This begins each summer term with a 7-week intensive bootcamp course that prepares students to begin their individual research projects in the fall. Students develop the mathematical, statistical, and computational foundation needed to do interdisciplinary research in our program through coursework, assignments, and computer labs. Topics include: dynamical systems, control theory, optimization, probability, and statistics.
After the summer, the students will begin their research, and will continue working into the winter term, where they will then present their research at the annual BYU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Spring Research Conference. Continuing into the spring, students will complete the training program by polishing their work for a national meeting, a final report, or journal publication. Applications for this program are due winter term; mathematics and statistics majors are especially encouraged to apply.
